Mad Mary: A Bad Girl from Magdala, by Liz Curtis Higgs (Waterbrook Press, 2001)
In this 'inspirational' Christian book, the author first tells the
tale of fictional Mary Margaret Delaney, a 'bad woman' from Chicago
who has been driven mad by her demons. Then, the author lectures on
the real-life Mary Magdalene and attempts to uncover the truth
behind the legend with study questions and Bible verses.
This book would be an eye-opener and especially valuable for devout
Christians who view Mary Magdalene as nothing more than a prostitute,
but the author makes especial mention that in her view, Mary is just
an ordinally woman in extraordinary circumstances, and that true
Christians should ignore any views of her that aren't mentioned in
the Bible (particularly views from the Nag Hammadi Library or
any other non-canonical volumes).
